The fisheries ministers of Denmark, Norway and Sweden met in Stockholm today, Wednesday 23 November, to sign a deal banning discards in the Skagerrak.
The three Nordic countries intend to introduce the discards ban in the Skagerrak before 1 January 2013, according to a press release.
Under the ban, fishers must land all their catches. The ministers state they seek to promote the use of selective gear as a means to avoid unwanted catches.
This move puts the three countries ahead of the CFP reform, in which the EU is discussing a partial discard ban for some commercial species.
