“We’ve decided to wind up our research whaling to secure the safety of the crews and the boats,” japanese Fisheries Minister Michihiko Kano told a news conference as Japan formally abandoned its Antarctic whale hunt for the rest of this season.
It is the first time Japan’s so-called research whaling has been suspended due to interference since the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society began to target the whalers in 2005.
Quote of the week, number 2:
“I’m glad this season is over and Australia doesn’t believe there should ever be another whaling season again,” Australian Environment Minister Tony Burke said following the Japanese announcement.
