The EU might lose the right to catch bluefin tuna this year. According to AFP, the European countries concerned (except France) have failed to deliver their plans for recovery of tuna stocks to The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
AFP cites a letter from fisheries commissioner Maria Damanaki to the concerned countries (Spain, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, Greece), where she writes that the European fleet runs the risk of not being allowed to catch its quota for 2011 if the EU does not provide the recovery plans within the timeframe.
The decision about whether the EU will be allowed to catch tuna will be taken during the ICCAT meeting 21–25 February.
