Eurekalert: New study maps spawing habitat of bluefin tuna in the Gulf of Mexico
Studies using electronic tagging and fisheries catch data have shown marked differences in the preferred habitat of Atlantic bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a new study published in PLoS ONE. These results highlight the possibility of protecting spawning areas of endangered bluefin tuna while continuing fishing for yellowfin tuna elsewhere. Unfortunately the study also shows that the bluefin tuna spawing habitat overlaps the Deepwater Horizon oil spill area.
