At a parallel meeting in La Coruña on 2 May, over 70 NGOs, artisanal and small scale fisheries organisations and other stakeholders met to sign a declaration calling for small scale coastal fisheries to be at the heart of the CFP reform. Recognising the importance of artisanal fisheries to marine sustainability and coastal communities the declaration outlines the common goal of all signatories for the reform to: “ensure the recovery of fish stocks and the marine habitats where necessary, the promotion of sustainable fisheries, a just allocation of fishing access based on social and environmental criteria, and an equitable distribution of the benefits derived from these activities”.
